Adhesive Tapes for Repair, Mounting, Protection and Sealing

Adhesive tape is not one universal product. The backing material, adhesive system, thickness and intended application determine which tape is suitable for a particular job.

This department brings together general-purpose and specialist tapes for DIY, decorating, workshops, automotive wiring, packaging, insulation and industrial equipment. Available products include duct and cloth tape, double-sided mounting tape, masking tape, aluminium foil tape, PVC insulation tape, wiring loom tape and self-adhesive PTFE-coated glass-cloth tape.

Choose the tape for the actual surface and operating conditions rather than relying only on descriptions such as strong, heavy duty or multipurpose.

    Choose Adhesive Tape by Application

    • Mounting and bonding: double-sided cloth, foam and transparent mounting tapes for compatible surfaces.
    • Repairs and sealing: duct, cloth and aluminium foil tapes for appropriate temporary or permanent applications.
    • Masking and protection: general masking, painter's and exterior protection tapes with documented removal periods.
    • Cable and electrical work: PVC insulation and fabric wiring loom tapes for compatible electrical and automotive applications.
    • Packaging: clear, brown, printed and paper tapes for closing compatible cartons and parcels.
    • Specialist applications: PTFE-coated and other technical tapes for machinery, heat-sealing and industrial equipment.

These groups are not interchangeable. A packaging tape is not automatically suitable for electrical insulation, while an electrical tape should not be treated as a structural mounting product.

Duct Tape and Cloth Repair Tape

Duct and cloth tapes use a reinforced or fabric-based backing that can provide flexibility and resistance to tearing. Depending on the exact construction, they may be used for bundling, protecting, joining or carrying out general temporary repairs.

Check the backing material, tape thickness, adhesive type, temperature range and documented indoor or outdoor performance. Silver or black colour alone does not prove that a tape is waterproof, ultraviolet-resistant or suitable for permanent exterior repairs.

Do not use general duct tape for pressure-bearing pipework, permanent building repairs or safety-critical applications unless the exact product has been specified for that use.

    Double-Sided and Mounting Tapes

Double-sided tapes have adhesive on both sides and can be used to attach compatible materials without leaving a visible tape surface. The range includes cloth-backed, foam and transparent mounting options.

Before ordering, check the two materials being joined, surface finish, available contact area, expected load, temperature and whether the bond needs to be removable. Smooth appearance does not guarantee adhesive compatibility.

Descriptions such as nano tape, gel tape or heavy-duty mounting tape do not establish a safe working load. Publish a load claim only when it is supported by an exact test method, mounting area, surface and application conditions.

    Masking Tape and Painter's Tape

Masking tapes are intended to protect suitable surfaces during painting, decorating, construction or finishing work. Different products may be designed for general indoor masking, delicate surfaces, exterior use or longer clean-removal periods.

Check the documented removal time, compatible surfaces and exposure conditions. Leaving masking tape applied beyond its stated period can make removal more difficult or transfer adhesive to the surface.

For the complete decorating range, visit our painter's tape and masking tape departments. Those pages should remain the primary destinations for painting-specific searches.

    Aluminium Foil Tape

Aluminium foil tape combines a metallic foil backing with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. Selected products may be used for joining foil-faced insulation, sealing compatible ducting materials, protecting surfaces or carrying out suitable heating and ventilation work.

Foil thickness, adhesive type, liner, temperature range and resistance to moisture or flame vary between products. Do not apply one set of technical claims to every aluminium tape in this department.

Aluminium tape must not automatically be described as suitable for repairing gas appliances, flues, pressurised systems or live electrical equipment.

    Self-Adhesive PTFE-Coated Glass-Cloth Tape

PTFE-coated glass-cloth tapes provide a low-friction surface for selected heat-sealing, packaging, machinery and workshop applications. The current range includes multiple widths supplied in 10 metre rolls.

Confirm the documented continuous and short-term temperature limits, backing thickness, adhesive specification and electrical properties for each product. Maximum temperature figures should not be presented as a universal continuous operating temperature.

Use “Teflon” only when the exact product is genuinely manufactured or licensed under the Teflon brand. Otherwise, the technically accurate generic description is “PTFE-coated glass-cloth tape”.

Electrical Insulation and Wiring Loom Tape

PVC electrical tape may be used for compatible insulation, identification and cable-bundling applications. The exact voltage rating, flame performance, temperature range and relevant standard must be verified before making electrical safety claims.

Fabric wiring loom tape is intended for wrapping and organising compatible cable harnesses, particularly in automotive and equipment installations. Available widths allow the tape to be selected for different harness sizes and working areas.

Do not describe wiring loom tape as heat-resistant, residue-free, abrasion-resistant or suitable for engine compartments unless those properties are documented for the exact tape.

    Packaging and Parcel Tape

Packaging tapes are designed for closing suitable cartons, parcels and storage boxes. Selection depends on carton material, parcel weight, storage conditions, application method and whether tamper or handling information is required.

Browse the dedicated packing tapes and accessories department for clear, brown, printed and paper packaging tapes. That department should remain the primary page for packaging-tape searches.

How to Choose the Correct Adhesive Tape

    • Application: identify whether the tape is needed for masking, mounting, repair, insulation, packaging or cable work.
    • Surface: check compatibility with metal, glass, plastic, painted surfaces, timber, fabric or cardboard.
    • Backing: compare paper, cloth, foam, PVC, aluminium foil and PTFE-coated glass cloth.
    • Adhesive: check the documented adhesive type and its surface compatibility.
    • Width and length: select the required coverage and sufficient roll quantity for the complete job.
    • Temperature: compare the expected working temperature with the documented operating range.
    • Environment: verify exposure to moisture, ultraviolet light, chemicals, vibration or abrasion.
    • Removal: decide whether the tape needs a permanent bond or clean removal after a defined period.
    • Load: do not use unsupported tape to suspend equipment or secure safety-critical items.

Keep tape width, roll length, backing thickness and total thickness as separate attributes. Combining these values under a single generic “Size” filter makes comparison difficult and can produce misleading filtered pages.

    Preparing the Surface

    1. Check the product instructions and confirm surface compatibility.
    2. Remove loose dust, dirt, grease and moisture using an appropriate method.
    3. Allow the surface to dry fully before applying the tape.
    4. Cut or tear the required length without contaminating the adhesive.
    5. Apply the tape evenly without trapping folds or air pockets.
    6. Press across the complete bonded area using the documented pressure.
    7. Allow any specified bonding period before applying a load.
    8. Inspect the tape periodically where environmental conditions may affect the bond.

Some cleaners, solvents and surface treatments can damage the material or leave a residue that reduces adhesion. Do not publish one universal preparation method for every tape.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which adhesive tape should I use?

Start with the application and surface. Then compare the backing material, adhesive, operating temperature, required removal method, width and roll length.

What is the difference between duct tape and cloth tape?

The terms can overlap, but products may use different backings, coatings and adhesives. Compare the individual construction and specification rather than relying only on the product name.

    Can double-sided tape replace screws?

Only where the exact tape, surface preparation, bonded area and expected load support that application. General double-sided tape must not be treated as a structural fixing.

Can adhesive tape be used outdoors?

Only when the complete product is documented for the expected ultraviolet exposure, moisture, temperature and length of use. Colour and adhesive strength alone do not prove outdoor suitability.

    Is aluminium foil tape heat-resistant?

Selected aluminium tapes have documented temperature ranges, but the rating depends on the foil, adhesive and construction. Check the exact product specification.

Is PTFE tape the same as plumber's thread-seal tape?

No. Self-adhesive PTFE-coated glass-cloth tape is a technical surface tape. Plumber's PTFE thread-seal tape is a different, normally non-adhesive product used on compatible threaded joints.

    Will masking tape remove cleanly?

Clean removal depends on the exact tape, surface, temperature, exposure and removal period. Follow the individual product instructions and test sensitive finishes first.

Can electrical tape be used on live wiring?

No work should be carried out on live electrical systems. The tape must also have the correct documented electrical rating for the intended application.
