The product now known as ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape was invented by 3M in 1988. It was designed for professional painters to use in residential and commercial painting applications. ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tapes revolutionized the masking tape industry because it was the first tape to provide protection from UV and allow for a tape to remain on the masked surface for an extended time period.
